SOME RULES FOR A GOOD GROWTH UP FOR YOUR DANE

FEEDING

WHAT KIND OF FOOD YOU CAN GIVE TO YOUR PUPPY

It is fundamental for your puppy to have a correct feeding

mainly in its first nine months of life because this period when

great danes face the greatest growth.

Great dane is one of the most difficult dogs to rear

because it requires more attentions in comparison with other dogs.

An adult male reaches 75-90 Kg, an adult female 65-75 Kg,

and its height can range according to the subject, from 80 to 95 cms.

Among the weaker points of this breed are the legs which are

a telltale sign of a correct feeding. The lack or the excess of fats,

vitamins and calcium are the main causes of irrecoverable

defects of the limbs, and for this reason is essential to feed these dogs

al least during the first nine months of life with a dry food for puppies

(Royalcanine, Hills, Pro plan Purina, Eucanuba) You

can add to the recommended dose a spoonful of meat ,

cheese, or parmesan cheese etc., ANYWAY NO MORE THAN THIS

UNTILL THE NINE MONTHS.

It is advisable to provide the dog in the adult age too

with some food (suitable to the age) in order to guarantee

all the elements required

I will never get tired to tell

that a wrong structure of the limbs is always

a symptom of a bad feeding!!!!!!!!!!! Insofar I always

recommended all our visitors,

to hold under tightened control their new friend, and to show

him us at least once a month up to the seven months of life,

and to call us when facing any perplexities.

It is a good rule to hold your dog more thin then fat

(clearly thin doesn't mean a skeleton) in order to avoid to get heavy

the skeletal apparatus in evolution. We will give him time to round

after the nine months of his life, when the puppy will stop to growth

and he will start the structural construction phase.

You have to learn to observe your dog to decide if the quantity

of food is superior or inferior to its requirements. The metabolism

of every dogs, as for every human being, is different for this reason

the alimentary charts of the foods do not express always the

requirements of your new friend.

WE INVITE YOU TO CONSULT US FOR ANY REASON.

HOW MANY MEALS YOU HAVE TO GIVE TO YOUR PUPPY

An adult great dane  cannot eat less than two meals a day during all his life!!!!!

These dogs in fact, because of their massive structure, have

a slow digestion and they are subject (as all the giant dogs) to

the torsion. This is the reason why it's better to divide the feeding

in two daily meals in order to avoid to overtire the stomach.

For the same reason it's better to

assemble their sport activities away from the meals.

A 2 months old puppy eats four meals a day and

you will feed him like that until he will ask for them!
When he will begin to reject a meal you can

give him three meals until 6 months of age

WHAT KIND OF SUPPLEMENT YOU CAN GIVE:

As breeder I learned that

specific food do not always guarentee a correct structural

development in such a giant breed.

Of course, we are not speaking about genetical defects, which could be

avoided only by a correct breed selection, or about traumatic defects.

We are talking about defects related to a

fast growth in a brief time, typical of this breed.

I use to integrate the diet of the dogs who require it with a

product called ”Canzocal “ (by Medivet) that you can order in

a pharmacy. This product doesn't impose the assimilation of

the calcium, as happens with the injection, but it allows the assimilation

where needed.
It prevents the hip dysplasia and it is helps in case of fractures,

in the lassia of the cartilages and in the osteoporosis in senile age.

Anyway I always suggest to consult the breeder and the vet before

starting the use of any supplement.

SYMPTOMS OF BAD FEEDING

are the followings:

back legs flex to X
anterior legs flex to X
yelding in the back one
opaque hair
dandruff

ALL THESE SYMPTOMS WILL MAKE US UNDERSTAND THAT WE

ARE MAKING SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FEEDING OF THE DOG!!!!!!!!!

WHERE THE DOG HAVE TO EAT

It's important to take care about the position in which our dog eats

in order to guarantee a correct digestion and a correct construction

of the apparatus osteo-articulate.

It is therefore important to place the bowl in which the dog

eats to his height.

The anterior legs don't have to bend, but they have to keep on

holding a correct position. The neck has to flex as a swan in order

to favor the development of the muscles of the neck. It is clear

that the  bowl must not be in a too high position, but in the

correct relationship between the correct position and the growth

of the dog.The adult dog will have his bowl positioned on a chair or

on the special tripod that can be found in any specialized shop.

HIS DOGHOUSE

Even if it's difficult to believe it, great

danes would be apartment dogs and they suffer the lack of a

confortable shelter, hot and dry. This dog cannot

stay the whole day in the garden during the summer and the winter .

This breed also suffers the cold and the damp, his doghouse has to

be soft, but not flexible (as a little cot, where the back would

flex too much) isolated by ground, in a warm and dry place.

A great dane who has always to stay out, in late age will surely

suffer of rheumatisms or of osteo-articular problems.

THE EDUCATION:

Great dane is not a dog trainable to the attacks!

A dog of 90 kg would be very dangerous!

He loves his family and therefore he will defend it when necessary,

however it is not a territorial dog and therefore of mild nature

toward both men and animals. However it is very

important to teach him a basic education since early age. It has to

learn how to stay on the leash and some fundamental orders: foot,

footstep, set, stays ... etc. You can teach this orders by

yourself or bring him in a training school .

Since he is a  puppy, it's better to use him to go to the leash,

using a strangle collar.

This collar will serve for educating him to the five fundamental

orders, not inflicting him the torture of the strangulation but

teach him to escape to the annoying pressure answering to the

command. The collar doesn't have to be a punishment. On the

contrary it has to be a respectful mean of communication between

the animal and you! When he see the collar he has to be happy

because it has to represent the relaxation of the walk. If

during your walk you have to punish him, it's better to close always

in beautiful way so that he could preserve a pleasant

memory of the collar and the leash.

It's important that teach him not to jump on people and not

to eat at your table!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the three months of age, particularly if male, the puppy

will find hard to check well its needs. So, be tolerant!

After the three months of age you can pretend that he control

himself inside the house. Use the vocal tone to punish him, and

he will learn to listen and to perform your orders.

YOU CAN BRING A POLITE DOG EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!

Love

The most important things for a great dane are your

company and your love. If you purchases this dog you have to know

that he will require a lot of your time. If you desire

a dog just to put it in garden it's better to opt for another breed !!!!!!

It is a particularly sensitive dog. If you leave him for some days,

bring him to someone whom he knows because otherwise he could

refuse to eat until you come back. If you use to pass long time

away from home, bring him with you. He is a dog who could not bear

to stay more than a couple of days in a dog pension.

REMEMBER THAT THE DOG IS THE MAN'S BEST FRIEND

BUT MAN IS FREQUENTLY HIS BEST ENEMY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
